Bay College President Laura Coleman signed the statement of support for the guard and the reserve with the support of human resources and staff.

Coleman, says, “Bay College understands the unique talents and skills that service members can bring to the organization and encourages all veterans and active duty members to apply for college vacancies.”

The Statement of Support Program is the cornerstone of ESGR’s efforts to gain and maintain employer support for custody and reserve. The intent of the program is to increase employer support by encouraging employers to act as advocates for employee participation in the military. Solidarity Employers are essential to maintaining the strength and readiness of National Guard and Reserve units.

Director of Human Resources, Beth Berube, says, “We have several veterans and active duty employees at Bay College. We value their military service and respect and support their rights and responsibilities.

The first statement of support was signed on December 13, 1972 at the office of the Secretary of Defense by the chairman of the board of directors of General Motors. President Richard Nixon was the first president to sign a statement of support, and in 2005 every federal cabinet secretary and federal agency signed a statement of support to signify their continued efforts to be model employers. Since its inception, hundreds of thousands of employers have signed statements of support, pledging their support for Guard and Reserve employees.

Employers who sign a statement of support agree to:

We acknowledge, honor and fully comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act.

We will provide our managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.

We value the unique values, leadership and skills that service members bring to the workforce and will encourage opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans.

We will continually recognize and support our nation’s service members and their families, in times of peace, crisis and war.
