SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 9, 2021 / CSRwire / – 3Degrees, a company that helps organizations meet their renewable energy and decarbonization goals, today announced several notable advancements in the use of hydrogen as an alternative low-carbon to traditional fossil fuels: 3Degrees has developed a custom level 2-way hydrogen refueling in California and Oregon; the sectors of Oregon are the first to generate credits from the use of hydrogen within the framework of the Clean Fuels Program (CFP) of Oregon; and 3Degrees reported on green hydrogen produced by electrolysis in California.

The production of hydrogen requires a large and centralized operation and, as a result, production sites are limited in the western United States. Oregon, for example, does not have any hydrogen production facilities. The hydrogen was therefore purchased from two Californian producers and transported to facilities in Oregon to power hydrogen fuel cell forklifts.

3Degrees worked to verify the fuel supply chain, developed a novel carbon intensity calculation for fuel, and managed the track certification process with the Oregon Department of Air Quality (ODEQ ) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The courses were approved in mid-2021, with the first credits generated and monetized by 3Degrees over the summer.

3Degrees is also working with California State University, Los Angeles, to report on its green hydrogen production and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This report includes infrastructure credits under the Hydrogen Refueling Infrastructure (HRI) provision that was added to the LCFS as an amendment in 2018 under the vehicle credit provision. zero emissions (ZEV). In operation since 2014, the Cal State LA Hydrogen Research and Refueling Facility was the first such facility in the world to sell hydrogen by the kilogram directly to retail customers.

Dr David Blekhman, technical director of the hydrogen plant, said that “working with 3Degrees has been easy and has provided the support needed to secure the LCFS incentives”.

“Full decarbonization of transportation will require a blend of low carbon fuels to meet the needs of various types of equipment, including off-road applications,” said Dave Meyer, director of transportation markets at 3Degrees. “3Degrees is proud to support the groundbreaking work of our partners by working on the complex regulatory, supply chain and business issues associated with these projects to ensure our partners achieve the value they deserve. “
